Parents as first career navigators

Updated: Nov 29, 2021

A choice of profession is a difficult task for a young person. Parents can become first career navigators and coaches.

What does it mean to be a career coach for your child?

Search for professions that might spark their interest. Find and share news and trends in the areas of your child’s interests. There may be films, books or games that can be a stimulus for choosing a professional sphere. For example, films and books about successful and prominent musicians, doctors or journalists. Or science fiction where children can find ideas about professions of future.

When the area of interest of your child is clearer, you can check programmes and specialization, research their differences (academic, professional, experimental, with double degrees). Pay attention to novel programmes/professions – due to their novelty there might be lower competition but graduates can be in high demand by employers.

When you know the key words for a specialization – for example Neuro&Marketing or Human Organ&Design or Space&Tourism – you can start searching for a university. You can do the search yourself or via specialist platforms, such as https://www.bachelorsportal.com/ or you can use agents who can help you in finding a suitable university for a particular profession and then help to apply online.

Pay attention to employment rate

In this fast changing and competitive world the reputations of universities and degrees matter. Employers are queueing up to get access to future graduates from excellent universities and with in-demand skills and knowledge. The percentage of graduate employment during the first year after graduation is a very important indicator to consider when choosing a university. Some programmes reach 90% employment.

It is worth spending time and effort in the last years of school if you don’t want to be surprised later that your son or daughter can’t find a job after graduation.
